Can You Get Links Out of Just Helping People? Probably...
Filed in archive Link Building by Greg Cruey on February 4, 2009
Donna Fontenot sums up the dilemma many bloggers and writers on the web are now faced with:
These days, we have to actually create content worth linking to! Oh my, what a concept...
She looked at what she calls bartering for links in some detail over at Search Engine People earlier this week.
Link bartering is not simply the act of trading links with others. Instead, it is the bartering of services that may naturally lead to links. The key is that links should not be a required aspect of the service trade, but that getting a backlink from the trade would be at least somewhat likely, based on the fact that it would just make sense to do so.
How does that work? You form relationships (probably with the help of social networks like Facebook or Twitter). You realize that someone has a problem you can help solve. You help them solve it. The chances are good that the other party in this relationship will create a link to your site in the process of talking about how they got their problem solved, or perhaps just create the link out of gratitude.

But Donna talks about it in much more detail. You can read her ideas on the subject here.
