TechCrunch noted as a few days ago that YouTube could be on the way to monitizing its billion-video online library in the near future. How do they know? Google says so...
Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion in 2006 and has been trying to figure out how to make money with the site ever since.
YouTube is on the path to profitability in the “not-too-distant future,” Google reiterated today during its third quarter earnings call. And while that may sounds all well and good, they actually had some more specific impressive numbers to back it up.The article outlines a rosey advertising picture and new (or renewed) relationships with music producers.

I guess that given Google's track record of making things FREE and then finding extraordinary commercial value as part of that offering it would be hard not to believe they're about to succeed again.
