Google Bomb: Now in Russian
Filed in archive by Creative Weblogging on June 21, 2006
It's a well know fact that due to the way that Google's search algorithm
works, a page will be ranked higher if the sites that link to that page all use
consistent keywords.

Sounds like a great idea?

Maybe. For example if several thousands of sites will link to
http://www.vanguard.com with keywords "Best 401(k)" the site will appear in
Google search higher than less popular services.

But there's other side of the coin. The specifics of this algorithm open way to
unheard before internet publicity attack. If you want to discredit someone or
just play a prank simple have many Web sites refer to a target with predefined
keywords. This is called a Google Bomb and to see this in action just type "failure"
in Google and take a look at the first site in search results - the official Web
Site of George W. Bush.

And now this tactics seems to cross the borders and language barriers. If you
try to Google in Cyrillic for "враг народа"(translated
"enemy of the state") you will get the official site of Russian President
Vladimir Putin.

Ain't technology fun?
