Optimization
The art of choosing the right keywords is called Keyword Optimization. Most of the time, people who optimize their sites, optimize their pages to rank on multiple keywords at the same time. Worse would be to optimize it using the wrong keywords.
To get the most impact in search engines, each page should be optimized for one keyword only. Yes, one keyword, one page at a time. This is one of the important things to remember in keyword optimization.
Keyword Optimization Process
Let me guide you to the process of keyword optimization but having a example.
If you have a site and you are selling rubber shoes, you probably carry different brands and different types of rubber shoes.
If you check out http://inventory.overture.com to see how many people are searching for "rubber shoes" you get
671 rubber shoes
Now take a look at people who are searching for "nike"
337325 nike
72239 nike shoes
So what does this tells you? If you didn't check this out, and you went ahead optimizing one of your pages for "rubber shoes", chances are, you won't get much traffic.
Keyword Optimization Technique#1 - Find more specific keywords
This tells us that there are more people search for rubber shoes for a specific brand compared to the generic term "rubber shoes".
So what do you do now? If you think you need to create a page and optimize it for "nike", then you are wrong again. Going into google tell us that there are 89,700,000 results for the search word "nike". Unless you have a large budget for off page optimization, or you have a PR8 website, then it is not a good move for you to target such a very competitive keyword.
Keyword Optimiztion Technique#2 - Check the competition
Going back to the overture keyword tool, you find out that there are 9131 searches for "nike air max". In google "nike air max" has 4,000,000 results. Digging deeper in the overture tool, you find out some very nice search information about "nike air max 95″, "nike air max 360″, and "nike air max 90″.
Overture ---------- Google Result
5111 nike air max 95 ---- 1,870,000
4680 nike air max 360 ---- 947,000
2485 nike air max 90 ---- 1,850,000
Now optimizing for these keywords is more doable.
Keyword Optimization Technique#3 - target specific brand and model
The next thing to do is create a page specifically for "nike air max 95″. Yes, just one keyword for one page. Create good content, include pictures of nike air max 95, some specs about the shoe, what is it used for, what sizes are available, what colors, and other information that people would like to know about this specific nike shoe.
Do on-page optimization, and don't forget to put in your BUY button. After all, your purpose of doing SEO is to sell these shoes right?
After doing this for "nike are max 95″, then you can do the same for the other keywords.
Remember, to maximize your search engine ranking, always think about keyword optimization. The key is "One keyword per webpage".
