Time to Regulate SEO?

Congress is talking about reform and new regulations for the health insurance industry. We're discussing new regs for the venture capital industry. And the banking and credit card industry has seen a few new rules recently. TechCrunch seems to think that perhaps the time has come to regulate search engine marketing and the SEO industry, too.

It's a fairly long piece and the rationale is based partly on Google's dominance of the industry.

The situation we face today is unique. Due to Google's dominance – and the fact that it controls such an enormous amount of consumer behavior through paid and organic search listings – the company in essence governs commerce on the web. And any company that falls out of favor with Google, whether for reasons of bad practice or simple disagreement, can find itself at risk of going out of business.

I don't know that I agree with the logic, but I don't know that I don't, either.

It makes for interesting reading…
