Search engine optimization, or SEO, has become a must-have for any company with an online presence, but it's especially so for small businesses with limited brand recognition.
Learning how to do good SEO can help website designers to find new clients and offer a valuable service to existing clients as well. SEO experts are basically self-taught, so an investment in upgrading your SEO skills is likely to be more time-based than financial. There is a large and helpful SEO online community that can be very informative. The best thing to do if you are new to SEO is to read, research, and learn as much as you can. However, because SEO doesn't follow an exact methodology taught in business schools, and the algorithms that power search engines are not fully disclosed, there is a lot of bad information on this topic as well.

A trio of high school friends went on to create a successful SEO optimization business called Slingshot SEO. The company has 65 employees, 150 clients, and $5 million in sales, all by helping their clients' websites to show up high in the results of a keyword search on Google, Yahoo, Bing and other internet search engines.
A prime first-page location on these search engines gives the appearance of being the first choice out of potentially millions of answers to a query, and companies are are willing to pay a lot for that. The three dot com entrepreneurs are now 29 years old, and they have announced plans to continue their triple digit growth. It's not bad for a company that started out as an after-school hobby. Now the mayor and governor of Indianapolis, Indiana have announced a package of economic incentives designed to keep Slingshot in the city and help them to create an additional 114 jobs by 2013.
